TAREN
THE RANGER
“I learned a long time ago not to trust the road ahead. But I trust who walks it beside me.”
HIS STORY
Taren has never been the kind of man to offer his story freely.
A ranger by instinct as much as training, he learned to survive by paying attention—to the tracks others overlooked, the silence that came before danger, and the subtle changes that warned him when something was not as it seemed.
He has spent much of his life keeping people at a careful distance.
Lumen was the exception.
Taren has had the mana saber at his side since Lumen was little more than a kitten. They grew together, traveled together, and learned one another so completely that words were rarely necessary between them. Where Taren went, Lumen followed—and for a long time, that was enough.
Then they met Aelara.
What should have been another passing encounter became something none of them expected. Her willingness to trust challenged nearly every instinct Taren had spent years developing, while his caution frequently stood between Aelara and whatever trouble she was entirely too willing to walk toward.
Somehow, it worked.
And somewhere along the road, Aelara became more than someone Taren and Lumen happened to be traveling beside.
She became one of theirs.
Together they crossed Bloodmyst. They boarded the ship when their journey carried them away from the islands. And when they reached Darkshore and the road began leading toward something far more troubling than any of them anticipated, Taren stayed exactly where he had chosen to be.
At their side.
But there are things he has not told Aelara.
Pieces of his past remain carefully guarded, hidden behind the same watchfulness that has kept him and Lumen safe for so long. Whether those secrets are simply memories he would rather leave behind—or something that may yet catch up with them—is something Aelara does not know.
What she does know is that when danger comes, Taren is there.
Bow ready. Eyes searching the shadows. Lumen never far away.
Taren may not trust the road ahead.
But the circle of those he trusts has grown by one.
THE JOURNEY SO FAR
CROSSING PATHS
AN UNEXPECTED MEETINGTaren and Lumen's path crossed Aelara's almost by chance.
At first, there was no reason to believe their meeting would become anything more than that. Taren had Lumen, Aelara had her own road to follow, and eventually those roads should have separated.
They didn't.
What began as circumstance slowly became a choice.
BLOODMYST ISLE
TRUST EARNED ON THE ROADBloodmyst gave Taren plenty of reasons to remain cautious.
It also gave him time to understand the young priest traveling beside him.
Aelara's instinct was often to help first and worry about the consequences later—a habit Taren found equal parts admirable and infuriating.
But when the road became dangerous, she proved she could be counted on.
For Taren, trust has never come easily.
Aelara earned it anyway.
ACROSS THE SEA
THREE COMPANIONSBy the time they boarded the ship and left the islands behind, there was no longer much question of whether Taren and Lumen would continue with Aelara.
The question had quietly become where the three of them were going next.
For perhaps the first time in years, Taren stepped toward an unknown road without knowing what waited at its end.
He wasn't particularly fond of that part.
He went anyway.
DARKSHORE
THE SHADOWS ARE MOVINGDarkshore immediately put Taren's instincts on edge.
The warnings. The strange corruption. The shard they discovered. Small things that might have meant nothing on their own began forming a pattern he could not ignore.
Something was wrong.
And while Aelara searches for answers, Taren has fallen naturally into the role he knows best.
Watching.
Listening.
And making certain whatever is hiding in the shadows does not reach the people beside him first.
COMPANIONS
AELARA
THE PRIESTAelara was never supposed to become part of Taren's life.
She was someone he and Lumen met along the road—a young priest with a stubborn determination to help anyone who needed it and an occasionally alarming willingness to walk directly toward trouble.
Taren expected their paths to separate.
Instead, he kept finding reasons to stay.
Aelara trusts more easily than he does. She sees possibilities where Taren sees risks, asks questions he might have left unanswered, and has a remarkable ability to test the limits of his patience.
He would tell her that last part is her defining quality.
He would not tell her how quickly he has learned to recognize the sound of her footsteps behind him.
Or how often he checks to make sure they are still there.
Somewhere between Azuremyst, Bloodmyst, and the road that eventually carried them across the sea, Aelara became someone Taren trusts completely.
He doesn't need to explain what that means.
At least, that's what he tells himself.
DISCOVER AELARA →LUMEN
THE MANA SABERBefore Aelara, there was Lumen.
Taren has known the mana saber since Lumen was a kitten, and there are few creatures—or people—who understand him better.
Their bond was built over years rather than words.
Lumen knows when Taren senses danger before the bow ever leaves his shoulder. Taren can read the smallest shift in Lumen's posture and know whether the saber has heard something, smelled something, or simply decided someone deserves to be watched.
They have traveled countless roads together.
Protected one another.
Trusted one another without question.
And when Aelara entered their lives, Lumen accepted her in his own time and on his own terms.
Taren noticed.
He notices everything.
He simply chose not to mention how much Lumen's approval mattered.
